Hey everyone, first post here. I recently moved to Roanoke from upstate NY. I've been using a VL for the past few years. I have an older green VL Triad. I believe it has a velocity problem, balls won't leave the barrel. I'm looking at the Tippmann 98 Custom Platinum Series ACT Paintball Marker for $219.99 - here is a DicksSportingGoods link. Anyone know of any cons on this gun?

Hey chobo welcome to the board the tippman 98 is a solid marq alot of us guys started out with one of these. Other than reliabilty theres not much performance difference. Your better off spending that kind of loot on a low end electro That way you can keep up with most of the guns cats are shooting today. Check out some of the local guys on the board they have some sweet deals also look around on craigslist, I stay away from ebay and pbn on used stuff Im kinda old fashion I like to put things in my hand and see how it feels b4 I buy it good luck and happy hunting

I got a smart parts epiphany and I love it. I think I paid somewhere around 300 for it, but don't really remember. When I first got it I was scared that the electronics would not agree with being drug through the woods, but it has held up very well. The only thing is that compressed air seems to be harder to get refilled than CO.

This depends...
if you are playing in the woods, you can't go wrong with the Tippy 98C. I know guys who have been playing since the late 80s who only carry tippmanns (A-5, 98c). It is the Ak-47 of paintball markers. Ruggedness and reliability are its hallmarks. If you by a low-end electro, you get what you pay for. The electronic board is the heart and soul of any electronic marker, and a cheap electronic gun is just that.
if you are a speedballer, you need a fast shooting electronic gun to throw paint and the Tippmann is at a disadvantage.

The best woodsball gun is a speedball gun. Really the difference is mil-sim vs. speedball. When it gets right down to it, the dudes that dig mil-sim, simply dig mil-sim. They want that "look" of a mil-sim gun. Well, within those guns, I would highly recommend the BT ERC. It has an electronic frame, and comes with a built in rip-clip powered hopper (halo technology).
But that said, if you dont dig the mil-sim, or just dont care, but happen to be playing in the woods, then consider a mid range speedball gun. Typically they are lighter, they have a smaller profile, and are oftentimes much more capable. I think the Dangerous Power G3 is a fantastic value, and is the lightest marker on the market. It is available in black, so it would be suitable for woods action, while being lighter, faster and simply cooler than any old tippman.
And remember this: Whatever you spend on your gun, be it 125, 300, or 1000, over the course of having that gun you will spend more on paint and air if you are really a player.
So why buy a heavy, slow 98 to put zillions of balls through, when a G3 is sitting there for a few more bucks, and it promises to be faster, lighter, more accurate, and all around better?
Check out tigerpb.com or swing on in to our shop in rocky mount. I am Josh, and would be happy to help you.

I was at a tournament up at big pearl and two people had those dangerous powers and I was not impressed to all, they had both broke before the end of the day. Not sure what the problem was exactly, but still...

one lost a board and the other blew an air line, not sure if its poor quality control from DP or the fact that they were in the hands of 12yr olds lol but it did kind of turn me off on them that was only the second time both of the kids had used them also

I am not familiar with the DP line of markers but I stand by what I said about Tippmann. my primary is an Ego but, for the money, you can't beat the tippmann line. they aren't the best, highest performing gun but for beginners but they (1) are inexpensive, (2) work. For someone just starting out, of modest or limited means you would be hard to find a better use for your paintball dollar.
